Standards Organizations Activities

A.     Standards published during June 2013:

i. ASTM F467-13, Standard Specification for Nonferrous Nuts for General Use.

ii. ASTM F593-13, Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bolts, Hex Cap Screws and Studs.

iii. ASTM F2329-13, Zinc Coating, Hot-Dip, Requirements for Application to Carbon and Alloy Steel Bolts, Screws, Washers, Nuts and Special Threaded Fasteners.

iv. ASTM B633, Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel.

Scope modified:

1.5 It may be used for fasteners but specific specifications have been developed for manufacturing fasteners

in Committee F16 which may be more applicable (See Specification F1941/F1941M).

This is important to help fastener suppliers get users to change their reference for zinc plating from ASTM B633 to F1941. The reason this is critical is that B633 requires baking of fasteners that are in the Grade 5 and Property Class 8.8 range. F1941 does not require baking until parts are of greater strength than Grade 8 and Property Class 10.9 (HRC 32-39).

v. ASTM F467-13, Standard Specification for Nonferrous Nuts for General Use.

B.  Standards in the publishing stage:

    i.  B18.2.1, Inch bolts and cap screws.

ii. B18.2.5M, Metric flanged 12 point screws.

iii. B18.6.3, Inch machine and tapping screws.

C.      Standards in the revision process:

i.ASME B18.24, Fastener Part Identification Numbering System.

ii. ASME B18.31.2, Inch Studs.

iii. ASME B18.6.6, Inch Lock Nuts.

iv. ASTM F16, a new standard is in the works which is a compilation of inch and metric bolt standards including A325, A490, F1852, F2280, A449, A354, A325M and A490M. This is an effort to make the requirements of these related bolt standards consistent. This will be balloted in the summer of 2013. 

v. RCSC Bolting Standard, the annual meeting was held at the University of Cincinnati during June 2013. The next revision of the RCSC standard is scheduled to publish in late 2014.

vi. ISO/CD 13469, Riveted Joint Testing.

vii. ISO 10683, Zinc flake coatings for fasteners, is being prepared for final ballot sometime by mid-2013.

viii. ISO 4042, Electroplating finishes for fasteners was discussed for two days in an ad hoc meeting in Paris during June 2013. The majority of the work was on Appendix B, which addressed hydrogen failures and how to manage process variables to decrease its potential effects. No ballot is expected until 2014.

ix. ISO 3269, Fastener acceptance, first draft proposal to convert this standard from an AQL plan to a C=0 plan has been submitted to the ISO TC 2 by the US. The Committee agreed to continue work to rationalize the proposed samples versus the current sample sizes. Formal committee work will begin on this in October 2013, in Paris.

x. ISO 6157, Fastener surface discontinuities was discussed in Sydney, Australia. Work will continue in working group in 2013.

xi. ISO 2320, Locking nut performance-agreements were reached in Sydney. A ballot should be issued in early 2013.

xii. ISO 1891-4, Terms and terminology related to quality assurance. This was worked on at an ad hoc meeting in Paris in June 2013. This should be balloted before the end of 2013.
